A gutter crutch (also known as a platform or arthritic crutch) is a specialized mobility aid featuring a padded horizontal trough where the user rests their entire forearm. Unlike standard crutches shown in your image that rely on hand grip and wrist strength, gutter crutches transfer the user’s weight through the forearms to alleviate pressure on the hands and wrists.

Key Features.
  • Padded Forearm Trough: A vinyl or foam-covered “gutter” that cradles the forearm and provides a large weight-bearing surface.
  • Adjustable Handgrips: Vertical handles at the front of the trough that often rotate
360 degree and adjust in length to fit the user’s forearm.
  • Forearm Straps: Many models include Velcro straps to keep the arm securely in the trough, though these are designed to release easily if the user falls.
  • Lightweight Frame: Typically constructed from tubular aluminum with adjustable overall height settings.
